The spLinker is a Java application developed by CRIA to enable biological collections that do not have the prerequisites for serving data directly to the network to participate. These prerequisites are: a stable and fast Internet connection; appropriate equipment and software to serve data to the network 24 hours a day; and a qualified team responsible for maintaining the system. Those interested in participating in the speciesLink network can obtain further information on the page: How to participate.
For the network, it doesn't matter what management software is used by the collection. We believe it is important that each collection is able to use the software that best attends its needs. Data fields are mapped in accordance to the DarwinCore data model and communication can be done through open database connectivity ODBC or by transferring data to a tab delimited text file where the first line should contain the field names. Once spLinker is configured and the fields are mapped, the curator or responsible for the collection may send his/her non sensitive data to the most appropriate regional server available and this way make the data available to the network.
