Collection management software |
BRAHMS Botanical Research and Herbarium Management System - developed by the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford. The last analyzed version (5.48, 04/27/2003) looked rather fullfeatured, including tools to catalog images, DNA fragments and maps. The mapping resource, although still rudimentary, allows visualization of the specimen occurences deposited into the collection. New versions are frequently released. One of the great advantages of Brahms is its easyness to export data. Data extraction is really simple, for it uses DBF files which can be directly seen from Excel worksheets. Another advantage is the possibility to prepare data using simple files before incorporationg them into the database. This method, also used to check and clean data, is called RDE (Rapid Data Entry). It also features multi-user access to the database and some interesting system administration tools, such as different permission levels, and tracking of changes. Software analyzed on april 2003.
