Collection management software |
BIOTA Biodiversity Database Manager: a software that helps with management of specimen-based biodiversity and collections data. It can be used by researchers or institutions. It has been developed by Robert K. Colwell, from the University of Connecticut. Initially Biota was targeted to manage entomological collections, but it was further adapted to a broader use. However, it is not yet suitable to be used by herbariums, since it does not work with many information which are important to this taxonomic group. Biota allows storage of small images, but they are related to the species, not the specimen. Exporting and importing data can be accomplished by means of simple text files. Another important feature from Biota is the ability to correlate records when parasites and hosts are involved, something not easily found in other softwares. Labels cannot be customized - they have a fixed size with predefined fields, which sometimes limits its use. Software analyzed on january 2003. Institution: Robert K.
