Collection management software |
The ARTEDIAN Software for managing ichthyological collections developed and used by the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Application developed on top of a MS-Access 2000 database and particulary optimized for lot data-entry (facilities to insert several specimens associated to the same collecting event). The ARTEDIAN can handle images, including image metadata forms for specimens and localities. The images are stored in a specific diretory, and users can visualize them through the metadata form. It has support (step-by-step instructions) to import data from Muse, and it is capable of exporting data in pre-determined formats, like FishBase, FishNet, GBIF DiGIR (DarwinCore2), and tables to be used by online databases. Curatorial aspects are well covered, being quite complete in this respect. It allows printing reports and labels, and also allows edition. However, it is important to mention that no technical support is available, as well as no users manual. It would be interesting for collections that are willing to adopt this software to have someone with good skills on MS Access. The graphical interface is not so atractive, with forms filled with several buttons. During navigation, many windows use to pop up, which can bring some confusion. The top menus don't give much information.
