geoLoc
geoLoc is a tool developed by CRIA to assist biological collections in geo referencing their data. The data used to populate the database were obtained from: IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística), speciesLink/Fapesp, and GEOnet Names Server.

The database includes approximately 750 thousand names of Brazilian localities. Searching can be carried out complete or partial names and the information of the state is optional. In the case of an incomplete name it is necessary to select the option "detailed search" option however system response may be slow.

Besides showing the localities found in the database, a map of Brazil is provided showing the points where the localities occur. The user may select a locality on the map by clicking on the name presented in the associated table.

geoLoc is composed of an algorithm based on concepts in the Egaz program and is capable of calculating a coordinate for a predetermined distance and direction from a known location. In order to use this tool the user must provide the distance in kilometers and a direction (N, S, E, W, NE, NW, SE or SW) and click on the selected locality in the table. The map will show the points for the localities that were searched, highlighting the selected gazetteer locality and the calculated point, and providing the coordinate longitude and latitude and associated error (the coordinate precision uncertainty).

A selection of map layers may also be turned "on" or "off", according to the user's choice. In addition, as the user zooms in, more details, such as municipality (names), are shown on the map.
